It Doesn't Hurt to Ask
Today we were brainstorming ways to improve the new facilities at work. My coworker suggested that we move the TV. It was a good idea. She asked me if she should call general affairs and I said, “It doesn’t hurt to ask.”
The phrase, ‘it doesn’t hurt to ask’, is used to encourage someone to make an inquiry. It is used in a situation where there is no risk (or low risk) in asking because a negative answer will not cause harm. It can also be used when the negative answer will have the same effect as not asking. For example, if you want to ask that cute boy out on a date, you should do it. If he says, “no”, it is the same as if you didn’t ask him out. So, it doesn’t hurt to ask.
Example: “I don’t know if they can help me.” “Well, it doesn’t hurt to ask.”
