The hardest thing about cycling is just leaving the house

Over the past ten years, I have said this to a lot of people.  It began as just a statement about cycling.   Getting over the mental hurdle and just starting your journey is difficult.  With cycling, I need to put on my cycling clothes, oil my bike, fill up water bottles, put on sunscreen, plan my route, and probably some other things I forgot.  But when I start cycling, I always feel good.  I rarely regret going for a bike ride.

However, this phrase can also be applied to daily life as well.  As a metaphor, it is basically saying that it is difficult to start something, but once it has started, it is much easier to keep going.  A more familiar English proverb is, “the first step is always the hardest.”  “The hardest thing about cycling is just leaving the house,” is my way of saying the proverb.

Have you ever had a hard time starting something, but when once you started it, you enjoyed it?
